U.S. government report: Number of homeless people in the U.S. has increased significantly

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released a report on the 27th saying that the number of homeless people in the United States exceeded 770,000 in January 2024, an increase of more than 18%. The report shows that based on a single night statistics of homeless people in shelters, temporary housing and unsheltered environments across the United States in January this year, the number of homeless people in the United States reached 771,800, an increase of 18.1% over the same period last year, which is the largest increase since the statistics began in 2007. The report also said that the main reasons for the sharp increase in the number of homeless people in the United States are the housing crisis, inflation, natural disasters, the expiration of relief measures issued during the epidemic, and the sharp increase in the number of immigrants seeking asylum in the United States. According to U.S. media reports, Ann Oliva, head of the National Homeless Alliance, said the increase was “incredible.” Other experts said that the actual number of homeless people may be much higher than official statistics.
