China’s response after Taiwan’s Lai Ching-te is sworn in
The Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council of China issued a statement on the day Lai Qingde took office, criticizing Lai Qingde for “colluding with external forces” to seek Taiwan independence, and condemning him for violating the will of the Taiwanese people and undermining the stability of the Taiwan Strait.
“The motherland must be unified and will inevitably be unified. No matter how the situation on the island changes, no matter who is in power, it cannot change the fact that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China, it cannot change the basic pattern and development direction of cross-strait relations, and it cannot stop the historical trend that the motherland will eventually be unified,”
