On April 2, local time, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services began large-scale layoffs. The layoffs affect several agencies under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health. This is part of the plan by U.S. President Trump and Musk, the head of the U.S. government’s efficiency department, to reduce the size of the federal government and cut spending. The layoffs are expected to cut more than 10,000 full-time employees. Combined with early retirement and government buyout plan personnel, the department expects the total number of full-time employees to drop from 82,000 to 62,000, with an overall layoff of nearly a quarter. It is reported that this move saves taxpayers $1.8 billion a year. The layoffs have had a profound impact on the U.S. health system in many aspects, including the departure of a large number of scientists who play an important role in public health, cancer research, and vaccine and drug approval, and the cancellation of many research projects, including vaccines and treatments for future pandemics.
